The History Behind The Alex Johnson Hotel

The Hotel Alex Johnson was built in the roaring ’20s by a railroader with a flair for luxury. Though the city was much different when it was built, its class and charm remain as evident and appropriate in the city today.
Today the hotel is on the National Register of Historic Places and a landmark of the Rapid City skyline.
The hotel has played host to five United States Presidents, and has an interesting connection to the Sioux Indians. Johnson, the owner and builder of the hotel, had a deep respect for Sioux culture, and his affinity is apparent in the hotel. Original Sioux motifs around the hotel have been maintained over the years and remain just as they were when the hotel first opened its doors.
Today the hotel remains a top choice for those visiting Rapid City, with easy access to the civic center and a beautiful location in the heart of the historic region of the city.
